Feed efficiency isn’t a new concept for Agri-King; in fact we have been monitoring feed efficiency for over 15 years! Simply stated, feed efficiency is defined as unit of milk or meat produced per unit of dry matter (DM) consumed. Feed efficiency is vital to reducing a farm’s environmental impact. Making more milk or meat with less waste is profitable and responsible.
How do you improve feed efficiency?
Summarising 10 years of laboratory research and field studies, Agri-King advises:
- Manage forages and ensiled grains to maximise quality
- Treat forages with Silo-King (research demonstrates that treating forages with Silo-King® significantly increases dry matter and fibre digestibility)
- Further improve ration digestibility with trace minerals (A-K Dairy Fortifier Premium), direct fed microbials, and enzymes (Ru-Max)
- Test forages for dry matter and fibre digestibility (testing for both dry matter and cell wall digestibility are available at Agri-King)
- Balance and fortify rations to fully utilise the nutrients from forages which improve feed efficiency and animal health.
Results from 400 herds demonstrated that greater forage quality (IVDMD) correlates with greater feed efficiency. These herds also shared several factors in addition to high quality forages, such as balanced rations, cow comfort, good herd health, and optimal feeding management.
