The Dry Period

The most important animals on the farm are the dry cows...

Calves are developed, then born - two-thirds of the calfs' growth comes in the sixty days prior to freshening.

Maintain body condition - as much as 160 kgs can be lost in the first four months of lactation. Lost body weight must be restored near the end of lactation and maintained during the dry period.

Build the mineral bank - tissue reserves of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals have been depleted during lactation. Inadequate stored amounts may result in milk fever and calving problems.

Regenerate the milk glands - milk glands were lost during the last lactation. Now they must be rebuilt to prepare the udder for the next lactation.

Restore nutrients - vitamins and trace minerals used during her last lactation must be replenished. If this is accomplished properly, she will peak higher and hold longer in her next lactation.

Getting your cows off to a good start will determine the success of the whole lactation!
